Giovanni Giuliano graduated in 1981 at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and did postdoctoral studies in the USA, at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, studying carotenoid biosynthesis in photosynthetic bacteria, and the University of Pennsylvania, studying plant photomorphogenesis. In 1988, he became research scientist at ENEA, where is presently research director and member of the board of directors. His main research interests have been in the fields of plant photomorphogenesis, carotenoid biosynthesis and metabolic engineering, genomics and metabolomics. He has co-authored >120 papers on international journals, among which those on the potato, tomato, eggplant, robusta and arabica coffee, Gardenia, and N. benthamiana genomes, and several international patents (https://scholar.google.it/citations?hl=en&user=Yp9Iny4AAAAJ). He has received 25 Italian and 15 EU research grants, of which 5 and 4, respectively, as coordinator. He is presently coordinating an effort to build GRACE, a large European research infrastructure on plant genetic resources (www.grace-ri.eu). He received the 2016 award in Biological Sciences and their applications by the Italian Academy of Sciences, and chaired the 2018 Gordon Conference on Carotenoids.
